Fashion Designers of India

Fashion in India is much in tune with the theme of Fusion. With sudden burst of fame and glory, The Indian fashion industry has a long way to go. Let us have a look at some of the names whose efforts have made it possible to bring out the dormant fashion potential in the Indian environs.

Manish Malhotra: His stepping stones in Bollywood came with his designs that he created for Juhi Chawla in the film Swarg. With appreciations bestowed upon him, he never had to look back. From designing for almost all popular models and actresses of Bollywood, crafting wedding trousseau to being the man behind Michael Jackson’s attire as he appeared in New York for the Bollywood Awards, one simply followed the other. He is the one who believed in moulding a “look” to define his models or attaching a character to define them. Today, at 35  Manish Malhotra is a stalwart forever striving to be on the road of persistent enhancement.

Wendell Rodricks: Drifting away from catering technology to fashion designing, Wendell Rodricks is a man of multiple talents. With his inclination towards the class of white attires, his fashion range revolves around the minimalist theme. He has been an active columnist for a number of fashion magazines and serves as a freelance fashion journalist. Wendell Rodricks’ Shiva Temples Collection was showcased at the Festival of India by the Ministry of Culture in Canton, Peking & Shanghai in the year 1992.He has interned at international platforms and is known to be a patron of art and culture.

Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla: Well famed to be the crafters of heirlooms as opposed to garments, this duo rock the ramp with their designs that seem to have touched the tip  of fancies. One of the first ones to have got the chance to display their creations at Harrods, “the boys” successful alliance have made it big in the fashion circuit in terms of name, fame, glory and success.

Tarun Tahiliani: Known as the being the bringer of revolution in the Indian fashion scenario, Tarun Tahiliani established his first fashion boutique in India called ‘Ensemble’ inspite of being an international degree holder. He witnessed the potential of the Indian soil and used it as his bedrock to experiment with unique styles and textures. His own Tarun Tahiliani Design Studio is located in New Delhiby the label of ‘Ahilian’. His designs do not remain confined to the Indian shores. They have crossed waters and are in high demand in international markets as well.

JJ Valaya: Belonging to the royal city of Jodhpur, Valaya’s designs speaks a thousands words about his roots. His idea of implementing traditional crafts to adorn the urbane has been the reason behind his fame. With a solo show to be proud of in the year 1994, bringing out his product labels- Studio Valaya and Valaya Home along with  sharing international ramp space with major designers across the globe, Valaya has been an eminent name to confront the contemporary fashion and make it comes to terms with Indian artistic creations.

Rina Dhaka: One of the most experimental women designers of the Indian fashion circuit, Rina Dhaka’s entry to the couture world goes back to 1980's. With trendsetting designs, theme collections, international fame, she has expanded her horizons with her two brothers Nikhil and Shantanu joining her in the business and earned the wows of many.

Manish Arora: From being himself with “Manish Arora” to “Fish Fry”, Manish has climbed the ladders to success in a few quick steps. Manish has a number of upcoming projects in his kitty. From collaboration with MAC, two stores to be soon opened in New Delhi and an eyewear range by Inspecs, Manish is rocking the fashion stage with his ecstatic vision, sense of color and chic designs.

Rohit Bal: Probably the most prominent name in the world of attires and ensembles, Rohit Bal is a raging name. With high society clients like Uma Thurman, Naomi Campbell, Pamela Anderson, Cindy Crawford, and Anna Kournikova and being the brand Ambassador for Omega watches, since 2001, Rohit has kissed the face of success. Weaving fantasies handcrafted from the rural fabricators to tailoring merchandise from the retail outlets, Rohit Bal is a name to be reckoned amongst the renowned designers of the time.

Ritu Beri:: One of the early woman fashion designers of India, Ritu Beri stormed into the fashion scene with her graduation collection called ‘Lavanya’. With national and international acclaim, Ritu Beri has been a designer of much repute.

Ritu Kumar: Ritu Kumar’s essential difference lies in her unique ability to blend contemporary styles with ancient handicrafts. This has brought a new classicism in her designs. Her sub brand “Label” is targeted towards the independent, modern and mobile generation of women focusing on drapes, cuts, color, feel and quality of the fabric.
